KXAS studios

These are the studios of NBC O&O KXAS (5 Fort Worth), located on Broadcast Hill east of downtown Fort Worth (postal address, 3900 Barnett St.). As WBAP-TV, channel 5 originally had its transmitter site here (Amon Carter saw no reason why he should spend money to improve his signal in Dallas), but eventually NBC put its foot down and told Carter that he could either move the transmitter closer to Dallas, or lose the NBC affiliation—so he leased space at the WFAA/KDFW tower on Cedar Hill. When the TV and radio stations were separated in the mid-1970s, WBAP-TV became KXAS. (Ironically, WBAP radio is now an ABC O&O, and has a promotional partnership with ABC-TV affiliate WFAA!)

There are two towers on Broadcast Hill at the KXAS studios; we don't know if either one is the original WBAP-TV tower, but we suspect that one of them is. (See the next two photos.) Neither one is a backup.
