KJZZ-TV sign

KJZZ-TV sign

Across the street and a tenth of a mile west of KSTU we find Larry Miller's KJZZ-TV (14 Salt Lake City, independent), at 5121 Amelia Earhart Drive. Miller apparently paid Maricopa County Community College a bundle to “borrow” the callsign from KJZZ (91.5 Phoenix); Miller also owns the Utah Jazz NBA franchise. (What does jazz have to do with Utah? The team started out in New Orleans, moving to Salt Lake City in 1979.)

The station was first granted a construction permit in 1984, five years after the first application was filed. It took to the air in 1986 as KGBS; that gave way to KXIV in 1988. Larry Miller took control in February, 1993, and four months later changed the callsign to KJZZ-TV (having already owned the team for nearly a decade).
