John Dehnel was kind enough to take us out to the KSL (1160 Salt Lake City) transmitter site. This facility was built in 1932 as KSL's original 50-kW facility, with the then-standard “T” antenna. The original Art Deco transmitter building was built around a massive Western Electric type 7A transmitter—replaced in 1938 with a type 407A that remained in service for a remarkable 48 years. Unfortunately, the old Deco building was by 1986 considered a liability, located at too low an elevation and subject to flooding in the spring, so Bonneville built this utilitarian concrete building on higher ground, and tore down the old building to get the old transmitter off the site.
