Former KYBC studios

Former KYBC studios

When Yavapai Broadcasting consolidated its Flagstaff stations with its Prescott/Cottonwood properties, this old building—never meant to be a radio studio—proved inadequate to the task, so they moved up the street. (I had to read the sign on their front door to find out where they went.) KVRD-FM started started out as a docket 80-90 class-A in 1992, from a tower on Mingus Mountain giving line-of-sight to both Prescott and Cottonwood. Yavapai took ownership in 1995, and in 1997 KVRD-FM became a class-C3 from the same location, without changing frequency. (The callsign makes more sense if you know that KYBC was originally KVRD, for Verde Valley, the local name for this region.) As I noted in the introduction, KKLD (98.3C2 Prescott Valley) was moved into Phoenix; Yavapai's owner, Grant Hafley, sold it in 2002. Prior to and for some time after the sale, KKLD was being operated by Yavapai under an LMA.
