WBT transmitter building

It's a pity the windows are bricked up and the fencing is so dense, but at least they left the classic lettering up on the WBT transmitter building. When this facility was first built, Charlotte was still miles away to the north; now sprawl has enveloped the site on all sides, and the market has grown so far to the west that WBT's night signal is no longer adequate to cover the entire market. When duopolies were legalized in the early '90s, WBT's owners, Jefferson-Pilot, acquired a second FM to fill in this gap in service; the original WBT-FM (107.9) became today's WLNK, and the new station (a 99.3C3 in Chester, S.C.) became WBT-FM. I did not see either site; WLNK shares the WBTV (channel 3) site in Gaston Co., and we decided that WBT-FM was too far out of the way to photograph on our way down to Columbia.
