Standing on the west side of the Market Street overpass, we are looking east towards Boston Proper and Kevin Lynch's “tall spine”. At dead center is the John Hancock Tower; to the right, over the green billboard, is the top of the Prudential Tower with its master antennas. (This view is somewhat deceiving; the Turnpike does not run directly to the Hancock Tower, but actually takes a sharp curve to the southeast at exits 18/19/20, one mile east of this overpass, and ultimately passes under the Pru, crossing Clarendon St. about a block south of the Hancock.)
There are a number of other notable buildings visible in this view. To the immediate left of the Hancock Tower is the Old Hancock Tower, and next to that are 500 Boylston Street and 222 Berkeley Street (the latter being notable as the headquarters of publisher Houghton Mifflin). Poking up over the red billboard at left is One Financial Center, which is the transmitter site for WERS (88.9 Boston), WHRB (95.3 Cambridge), and WFNX (101.7 Lynn). Right next to One Financial is the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
