The launch platform, stripped of its steel accoutrements, still remains at LC-34 as a memorial to the three astronauts who died here in the Apollo 1 fire: Lt. Col. Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom (USAF); Lt. Col. Edward H. White, II (USAF); and LCDR Roger B. Chaffee (USN). A kiosk on the edge of the apron describes the accident and the biographies of the three astronauts. A plaque (see next photo) is mounted on one of the concrete legs of the launch platform.
