Stata Center construction (Gates tower)

Gates Tower

[ Up | Prior | Next ]

A few steps closer to Kendall Square takes us to the corner of Main and Vassar, where we can get a good view of the other half of the Stata Center, which will house the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. The tower is named after none other than William H. Gates III, a man roundly detested by many of the future occupants of the building, but honored here for his $20 million contribution towards the construction of the Stata Center. Gates was a close friend of the late Michael L. Dertouzos, LCS's longest-serving director.

Look closely at the concrete support columns and note the utter absence of plumb.
